Display manager problems mdk 9.1
Thrilled with 9.1 (and windows free) but there remains an annoying problem.
I like the graphical boot but when I use KDM or even worse, mandrake's custom version mdkdm I get something really weird... I can log in as my user (sometimes it shows ALL the users like 'admin' 'sound' and sometimes it just shows root and my user like its supposed to) and I can select all the window managers I have installed...but no matter what I select, I get the same result.. A plain window with a plain Xconsole and nothing else...no window manager nothing. This is so weird because the first boot after install, everything worked fine. On reboot from there, it started. Nothing I've done fixes it. I can use GDM, and that works just fine. I just like KDM better. (I'm using my laptop right now and everything works ok) Anyone else have this problem? I can't seem to find a fix to this...google gave me nada and the search function seems disabled at the mandrake forums. |
How did you break it? Were you using a gui while logged in as root? Tisk tisk! ;)
|
actually no. That's the weird part. I have no clue how I broke it.
I had 9.1 for a week running fine w/o problems...that's when I decided to wipe the drive and get rid of windows completely and do a fresh install. Here's what I did basically... 1 - did the install, used ReiserFS for a root partition and a /home partition, made a swap. The install went normal. 2 - Now, Mandrake has ALWAYS had this problem with my laptop, by default it initializes the network BEFORE starting PCMCIA and that causes the load to freeze. So on first boot I hit 'I' and don't start network and pcmcia. Once in KDE (first boot with DM worked fine at this point) I used 'su' so I could rename the S11pcmcia symlinks in the rc*.d directories to S09pcmcia. I also added the lines I need for my sound chipset on the laptop (NeoMagicWave) in Modules.conf.. 3 - Reboot, get into MDKDM and I have only the 'default' and 'failsafe' options in the window manager selection. Either gets me what I described. 4 - Used 'su' and 'init 3' to kill X and go to console. From there I 'startx' and I'm in KDE without a problem. So I reboot. 5 - Once rebooted I'm in MDKDM again, now all the installed windowmanagers are listed, but choosing any of them only gets me to that stupid XConsole. 6 - Do init 3 again, go into KDE, fireup Mandrake Control Center and I chose KDM for display Manager...got same result as above (all wms listed, but get only Xconsole) 7 - Changed to GDM, that works normally. The only anomaly I can find is that when I shutdown the laptop now when using GDM I see a message "shutting down dm.....[FAILED]" but nothing else seems off. I haven't the faintest idea where to go on this... :( BTW I do GUI as root from time to time :) but not often and only when I have a LOT of stuff that needs doing as root. I usually try to use 'su' |
Weird indeed.... would another fresh install be a possibility?
I use root a bit too, mainly coz I'm not great with command line text editors atm, and I forget I can start gui apps under the root in a normal session. ;) |
I considered a fresh install, but I have it all setup nicely. A fresh install wouldn't be catastrophic, but it would be too much of a bother for such a problem since GDM does work, I just happen to like KDM better (when it works that is) :D
I'm trying now to find info on what files it uses for configuration, maybe that's where the problem lies since the packages seem ok... |
If it's any help, there is a gui config tool to set up the KDM login gui, and set which users are shown. Maybe try to run that to fix up your install.
Or compare your config files to those of other posters with similar setups? :) |
Well I haven't been able to find a GUI for Mdkkdm, but I've played with the Kdm setup in KDE's control center and it didn't change much :( I'll try again tonight.
I've been digging around and I can't find what config files they use....ugh. If anyone can point me the way, it'll be much appreciated. |
Ok...just tried uninstalling and re-installing mdkkdm (using rpm and urpmi) and it still doesn't work.
:( still lookin |
