Disk is already fully (1) partitioned with XP, how can I squeeze a new partition in?
I've a 74 gb hard disk, one partition for the lot (that's how it was done for me). I've got XP (upgrade from Windows 2000) onboard, and am interested in putting linux onto the disk. As far as I know- for dual booting option, there must be a partition for each the XP and LINUX.
Any idea how I get the new partition by retrieving the necessary space from the original partition? The relevant specifications are: 74gb hard disk. 1 only partition to full extent of disk. Cannot reformat whole disk or I'd lose the 2 years work (120k files) onboard. Got XP Professsional upgrade onboard which preserved all the files infrastructure and contents inherited from Windows 2000 activity. Got Fedora 3 LINUX which I wish to place into a reclaimed space partition. Machine is 500 mhz Gateway 256mb Ram Thanks for even reading this. Joe Garvey, Cork, Ireland. 24th October 2005 |
You can resize the partition, and create a new one with the space. In the Windows world, the most reliable tool to re-size partitions is PartitionMagic. There is a Linux equivalent called Parted. I have only used PartionMagic on resizing partions. It is quite reliable. Perhaps someone can speak about Parted. Welcome to the wonderful world of open source software.

Thanks for your offer. At the present time I can't take you up on it, but you may hear from me in the future. In the mean time, I'll have a beer in your honor!. I should mention, that the parted program has a visual alternative called (I think) qparted. Good luck.

It's called QTParted, and it's really handy. However, I don't know if the Fedora installer lets you run it before installation.

The Knoppix LiveCD has QtParted and the SystemRescueCd LiveCD has both QtParted and GParted. You can use one of these to resize your partition before installing.

I'm looking for a Live-CD that actually includes Gparted, but I can't find any. Does anyone know? - Ketil |
