disk clean up


i've been running debian sid for like 6 month's ... and i've noticed my my root partition is allready 18 GB... movies,songs,vm,games and backups are not on that partition.

is there a tool or a guide for linux for a cleanup? temps and cache and other?

Probably a generic method to try and find out WHERE the
space is disappearing to ...

du -sm /* | sort -g

One possible culprit is logging, specially if log rotation
fails. Another option is the retaining of all the .deb's you
ever installed.

Debian:
apt-get clean
Try localepurge, cruft, debfoster

For gui tools:
xdiskusage
baobab for gnome
konqueror for kde

For an effective disk clean up solution:
/bin/rm

konqueror (the KDE file manager) has a very nice disk usage view. It takes a while to populate, but it can help you identify where your disk space is going.

There's also filelight, kdirstat and others (see nx5000's suggestions).
