disabling x server to install nvidia driver

I am trying to install the new nvidia drivers, but everytime i run it says i have to disable x server. I'm a nux newbie and i have no clue what to do so if someone knows I could really use the help. Running Mandrake 10.1offical

In terminal as root

init 3

Then try installing.
