Disabled GDM after installing NVIDIA graphics driver
I'm currently running Ubuntu Warty Warthog. I installed the NVIDIA graphics driver and rebooted my computer. When it booted back up it attempted to start the GDM three times. After the third time it gave me a message saying it cannot start Xserver because of an incorrect setup and to restart the GDM when the setup was correct. I have no GUI access ony the shell access. I need to know what I need to do. I have no experience with this sort of things. Explicit instructions please from the shell please.

What error message did you get? Something like screens found but no useful setup? You have to edit your /etc/XF86Config-4 file so it reflects your stuff right. You can also use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" as root to get a question program that sets the stuff. You're probably using the wrong driver now. You'll want to use the driver called nvidia

It tells me: "I cannot start Xserver (your graphics display) because XFree86 is not properly configured. Would you like to run a diagnosis?" I click "YES" and it brings up a display of XFree86 information. My options are "Would you like to view advanced diagnostic?" Since I can't do anything else I click "YES". It displays the same information and says "I will not start Xserver until the GDM has been properly configured." I haven't tried "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" yet, so maybe that will help |
You just need to run your xorg or xfree86 config.

I ran those and went with the default options. It still won't load the GDM and it's still telling me that the GDM is improperly configuered. Any ideas?

What happens when you login to the console and run "startx".

I get the same error message
