Difficulties in changing the Desktop Environment
Hi there, I'm a brand new Linux user with a lot of Mac OS experience. I'm running Linpus Linux Lite and it's infuriatingly simple. I have opened Package Manager and tried to change to the GNOME Desktop Environment (KDE is also available), but i am stuck on XFCE.
When i switch to GNOME, should i select all 98 optional packages (44 is the default amount)? When i simply check the box and click Apply the 'Resolving dependancies...' window comes up and the bar nears the end before showing the error message "Missing Dependency: gecko-libs = 126.96.36.199 is needed by package yelp"
How do i fix this and cange desktop environments? XFCE is comforting at first but becoming too inhibiting.
I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook with an Intel Atom CPU N720 1.6GhZ processor. The OS is Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.15.E
Thanks in advance
gecko-libs is a Firefox library. Fedora Core 6 taught me how to get around a similar if not same error. Remove Firefox or other Mozilla product if you don't have Firefox.
Then try to install the other desktop environment with it's dependencies. If successful, reinstall Firefox.
You can try upgrading Firefox to version 2.0 if you have an earlier version.
first, you don't need to open the package manager to change your
desktop environment. To do this you can change it before you log into
system, in the login screen there is a menu that will do it for you.
second, no you don't HAVE to select all, these 44 packages that you
said are the core desktop packages, and the others are optional stuff.
And the depenency error is unusual, try refreshing your repositories.
Linpus Lite does not give me a login screen. I downloaded the ISO of Ubuntu but i can't burn that and install it or move it to other media as Linpus Linux is built for five year olds.
i just want a nice normal GUI!
