Different mail downloading model

Hi,

I currently have a nice fedora installation running, and do not have major troubles. However I believe some little things can be set to work better. So I set sail to make the system really perfect.

This question is about downloading and viewing mails. I receive to much spam and wish to stop it some way. I use primarily KMail to view them. Here is how it currently works:
I constantly have Korn running, connecting to the server and checking whether there is mail for me (lately I am using GKrellM instead, but the principle is the same). When I see that a mail has arrived, I invoke KMail, press "check mail" (since I coulnd't get it to perform this operation automatically on boot) and read my new mails once they are downloaded. The system works, I can read my mail. Still 3 out of 5 mails i get daily are spam, and I know that KMail doesn't have spam feature. So this is how I want the new model to be.

First a little tool, possibly a daemon connects to the server every once in a while and downloads the mail to the default folder (~/mail). Then some spam programs run on this folder in order to delete some spams they can detect. And finally Knode (or GKrellM) warns me, saying that there are new mails in my folder (they are of course already downloaded and filtered). I finally invoke KMail, to read and view them.

This system may sound like far-fetched science-fiction at first, but it seems to be the most efficient way. If this is possible, can you tell me how?? I do not wish to lose the past mails of course....

Thank you!
Bibby
