Different icons for each KDE virtual desktop?

I have SuSE 9.1 and KDE set up with 8 different desktops, each with it's own purpose so I can go right to the application I need, and I know exactly where it is running. I also have a large number of icons on my desktop, to the point where it is becoming cluttered.

I think it would be extremely helpful to have different icons on each desktop. This way I could have more purposeful icons based on what I normally use the desktops for (e.g. filesystem shortcuts on my filesystem management desktop, different browsers on my internet desktop) without adding to the clutter.

So my question is this: Is there any way to made each KDE virtual desktop have it's own special set of icons?

I can hardly imagine nobody has thought of this before, but a Google search and a forum search turned up no useful answer (somebody else had asked a similar question, but got no replies).

Hi TexasDex,
First post here...I had a similar idea just yesterday, and I was sure it is do-able already until I did some search and found this post...dating 5 years back... I agree, it is hard to imagine, but it looks this idea remained just an idea. Still, I think it would be extremely useful and could be a hallmark feature of Linux (any GUI) because no other systems seem to have it and it is unlikely they plan to do it. If anyone is aware of such a thing, please notify.

Since I have no other place to post this, I describe my idea here, in the hope, that someone may just stumble upon and could use it as a basis for further ideas/brainstorming. I am no programmer and have no chance to make it happen. :-(

So, I thought each Desktop would behave as a folder, with its own icons and settings. In addition to regular icons/shortcuts/files/etc we could place shortcuts pointing to other desktops, named with topics of interest like "video editing" or "work" or "games". One click, and the requested desktop will appear containing only limited amount of icons related to its topic. Plus, of course, displaying shortcuts to other desktops. Or, instead of individual desktop-shortcuts, a desktop-grid, similar to what we see in the Taskbar, could be displayed showing all, or just selected list of other desktops making navigation much faster.
Alternatively, there could be a "Master Desktop", containing all basic icons and links to the thematical desktops...the possibilities are endless

I can see this is a lot of programming, so I thought of a faster quasi-solution to prevent icon-overloading. It would be good to be able to place lists on desktops, displayed only by one icon, click, the a set list of icons/programs rolls down, and just click again to open the application on a predefined Desktop. For example, there would be a folder for "games" along with the settings that anything in this folder will be opened on Desktop#3. Thereby, clicking on the link "games", a list of games would be displayed, roll down, click to start the game and it would open automatically on Desktop#3. This seems a lot easier to achieve, maybe it is do-able already. I know, it is possible to place folders in the Taskbar and open the items in it with one click but I have no knowledge of either placing such shortcuts on the desktop, nor of the ability to pre-define where they should open. If anyone knows and existing solution, please reply.

Sorry for the long post, I have tried to keep it as concise as possible...

I realize the OP is probably dead by now. But Google led me here, and like many a person who eventually became a skeleton by a dusty trail in the desert, I am confident others will follow eventually.

I wonder if the desired solution could be achieved by using a different dock in each desktop. Consider, for instance, the option of customizing one's Start Menu in Windows. Admittedly, I've found Linux more difficult in that regard.
