delete chunks or regions from text file

hi. all
i am trying to find a command line way (sed ? ) or deleting regions of text from a file.

The idea is to strip my Inbox file. It's currently quite big and i was wondering whether it's possible to ask sed to cut regions starting with word "a" and ending with word "b"

Any comments will be appreciated

I have no answer to what you attempt to do here, but have you tried to compact your mailbox? I didn't know about this feature and ended up with a huge inbox file.

This could be helpful.. How about would i go doing that? I use Evolution.

No idea about Evolution, never used it myself. But in Thunderbird there's an option under the File menu (File -> Compact Folders). Simple as that.

When you cat your inbox file, you might see that loads of old mails that you thought you had deleted from your inbox are still there. This easily adds up to several MBs. Compacting it will get rid of that abundance.
