Defconf Pops Up When I Install Updates... What Is This?
When I install updates through Update Manager in ubuntu 8.04, a window called Debconf keeps popping up asking "what I would like to do with menu.lst". It gives me a list of seven options including, 'keep the local version currently installed' and 'install the package maintainer's version'. What the hell is this? What option do I choose? Why does this 'thing' keep popping up?
The debconf windows is asking you if you want to keep the file menu.lst that is configured on your system or over write it with the new one in the update package.
The menu.lst file is a grub file that you modify when you need to add additional kernels to your system or need to dual boot linux and windows. based on that I think it should be ok to keep the original version

romsieze, thanks for the reply. The first time that I attempted to install the most recent kernel/headers for ubuntu, the defconf window popped up and asked me what I wanted to do. I closed the window and then a message came up that stated that the kernel/headers won't be updated. What do I do now? Is this a problem?
you should be able to re run the update procedure.
romsize, thanks for the reply. Actually, I don't see the updates when I run Update Manager again that defconf warned me won't be installed. WHat do I do now?
The easiest thing would be to install them via Synaptic, the kernel version is 2.6.24.21. Look among the linux-kernel entries.
Hey, brianL. Thanks for your reply, dude. I looked in Synaptics, as per your request, and found 'linux-libc-dev' installed with version 2.6.24-21. Is this the kernel you're referring to?
