Decent fonts for Iceweasel / firefox?

I'm using Iceweasel / Firefox in Debian 4.0 r1.

How can I improve the font quality. The displayed font is terrible - scratchy and unpleasing. Is there any way to smooth it out?

Thank you, Jeff

First:
dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config ... and answer No to the question about bitmapped fonts.
Install ttf-bitstream-vera.

Second:

...Especially Section 3
