Debian rescue mode: Kernel panic

Hi,

I am new to Debian though I have some experience in Red Hat Linux. I was basically trying to get into the rescue or single user mode in debian.

I have installed Debian 3.0 and I used the installation cd to boot from.
When I typed boot: linux rescue, I get the error "Kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs".

But when I try to give the root partition - boot: rescue root=/dev/hda2, it boots up completely rather getting into rescue mode.

Can anyone let me know how to get into rescue mode in Debian?

Thanks,
Manudath
