Debian--libx11-dev installation and configuration errors

1 Attachment(s)
Can anyone tell me what the hell the error message shown below and in the attachment means??? Apt-get, Aptitude, dpkg and member limiter's 3/21 post all give the same outcome. Do I need to simply remove the offending .deb file from /var/cache/apt/archives? Do I need to install squeeze from scratch? (I'm installing over a tempermental lenny-sid hybrid installation.) This thing is blocking installation and configuration of 28 other packages. Thanks for any insight.

Code:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libx11-dev_2%3a1.3.3-4_i386.deb (--unpack):
short read on buffer copy for backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/share/doc/libx11-dev/libX11.txt.gz'

Hi,

You most likely have a partially downloaded file so try to run:
Code:

apt-get clean
then remove all the files (NOT the partial directory) in /var/cache/apt/archives/ and then try again.

PS: hell has nothing to do with this, that's just life, sh*t happens.

Kind regards,

Eric

gconf2 configuration errors: parser, schema corrupted

With your help, EricTRA, I cleared up the libx11-dev problem. Thank you.

But alas I am not out of the woods. I cannot configure Gconf2, and this is blocking installation/configuration of eight other packages. I have used Synaptic, Aptitude, dpkg -B, and apt-get -f to try to clear this up. Each time I get the code below:

Code:

dpkg: error processing gconf2 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

The only fix possibilities I can see are to manually delete the offending files in /usr/share/gconf/schemas and-or reinstall file-roller. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I must say that I have had nothing but frustration since I first installed squeeze. Web pages display slowly and incorrectly in both Epiphany and Iceweasel, video and other plug-ins don't work, applications hang during loading, and so on. What's happening???

Hi,

Debian is considered a very stable distro (if you're not using testing or unstable). Without being sure of course, I think that something is terribly broken and has been for some time according to your post. As it happens a friend of mine installed Squeeze day before yesterday and the only problem he encountered was with the wireless NIC.

If you have to start deleting files manually in order to get something working again then that's wrong, you'll end up with an unmanaged system at the end and only get more frustrated. I'd advice you to take a backup of your settings and documents and install from scratch. Another thing you might consider is to stick with one package manager, stick with apt-get or synaptics and always use the same. Don't switch between them since each one saves its information in different locations and crucial information about installations and dependencies might get lost if you switch.

Can you indicate how you're installing GConf? You're not compiling software by any chance instead of using the package manager?

Kind regards,

Eric
