Debian Install Problem

OK, so here we go. I decided to go back to Debian after a break (since 2.0). Currently dual booting WinXP and Slackware.

On install the system hangs when it gets as far as starting the log daemon. I have tried re-downloading and re-burning the image in case it was that. No different. I really really like Debian and would love for it to be working.

System is an AMD64 and I grabbed the Sarge AMD64 unofficial.

unofficial? could be part of the problem...

When booting you should see a prompt to push I (or is it y) to boot interactively, i.e. you can tell it which services to start etc. Do that, then go through and tel lit not to start log, see if you can boot, if so then disable it from startup

Now why didn't I think of that? Actually I don't think I saw the prompt. I will give that a try and let you know what happens. My wife is starting to get itchy about having it.

It'll be very soon after selecting your boot loader option.

And she's starting to get itchy about having the machine or Debian? if it's the latter you're a lucky man

I don't think there is an "official" version.

You'd probably be better off to pick up the Etch installer. Only issue there is that the AMD64 release is currently in the process of moving from temporary development repos into the official Debian ones. Sid is now completely moved to official repos, but I'm not sure about Etch.

I would recommend getting Etch installed, then check to make sure your sources.list is accessing official repos. If it's not, change it and do a dist-upgrade to Sid. Then you can change the sources.list back to 'testing', and by the time you need to update again, things should be worked out.

I would also recommend not using the daily build of the installer. So go with the first set of minimal CD instead of the second group where it says "If you'd like to try something newer".
