Debian console video mode

How debian (woody) changes the video mode and put the penguin at the screen's top while it is booting???

I checked the lilo.conf file and the video mode option is set to normal.
(vga=normal).

That also changes the resolution of the console and the font size a little bit. I've been trying to find a way to do that, I know it's related to the kernel because the stock 2.2.20 kernel has it and my 2.4.20 kernel from kernel.org doesn't.

Anyone have an answer?
