dd stalls on some dvd backups

hi, my acer revo nettop doesnt have a dvd drive so i have to rip stuff to my network in order to view them. i do:
Code:
lsdvd && dd if=dev/dvd of=moo-vee.iso
i got star-trek but it freezes at 25mb (i think where vts_3_1.vob begins -- the main film).

why does this happen, i thought dd was supposed to create a byte-for-byte replica of the content on the dvd ?

I believe that it has to do with yet another protection that companies put on dvds. To get around this in the past I've used DVD Shrink under wine, and it's worked very well. Here's a site that demonstrates various ways of working on that natively in linux:

I believe so, it looks as if they through in corrupted blocks to stop copying.

http://www.mythtv.org/pipermail/myth...il/175899.html

has a sample script on how to use ddrescue to create your iso
