data recovery possible?

I made some pictures for my final paper. Since I made them in surgery room it's kind of hard to make them again. Problem is I had them on the windows system which my brother and sisters use as well. Now they're gone, so I suppose someone deleted them. Also my brother decided to format the cam's hd without asking me.

Is there any data recovery program that I can use via a liveCD out there?

I think my chances are small since I suppose after they were deleted I did a system cleaning etc. deleting trash, defragmentated but I still would like to try if there's a program out there.

Thanks for any help!
