Data Recovery for External HDD

Hi, when insatlling Mint 10, I re-did some partitions, but forgot to turn off my old 30Gb external HDD, and deleted it's partitions. Which is the best software to recover it?

It was partitioned with Windows software I think.

Or should I use XP and freeware? Or else it will cost me $70-$80.

Use Test Disk. Many distributions have it in their package repository.
