Data Logger Program

I'm looking around for a good scientific data logger app for linux, sort of thing suitable for use in a school lab.

Only stuff I've found so far seems to be industrial-grade, highly complex professional programs, which cost £500 a license and do a lot of stuff that I don't need.

Oh, that reminds me, I also want something free. (Or at least very cheap...)

What do you mean by 'data logger'? What do you want the program to do?

The only one that comes to mind is Matlab for Linux, but it's a commercial project. A google search for that term will probably yield some results like "it works like matlab".

How about Maxima or Scilab then?
