Damaged Desktop does not show icons for contents
I made a wrong maneuver and erased some files in my home folder.
As a result, I lost some info (not serious), but more puzzling, I no longer see icons for the few files stored in my Desktop folder.
I have no idea where to start to debug/repair this.
I created another user to try and figure out what I am missing. The other user desktop works fine.
Grateful for any suggestions.

Problem has disappeared.
After rebooting again, my desktop (Gnome, BTW) has returned to its normal appearance. Go figure...
