i want to use my Epson Stylus Color 640 under linux and so i installed cups. Worked ok, could start cupsd and access the web interface. Only thing that hadn't worked is printing. SO, i followed the advice from linuxpringitn.org and installed gimp-print. Now, if I want to start cupsd, i have to wait about 3 minutes. Also, printing STILL doesn't work. Don't know the hell why!!! The printer just sits there staring at me and doing NOTHING. Simply nothing. Cups claims that all is perfect. BUT NOTHING HAPPENS!!!!
First, let's see if we can get you to help yourself. You need information about the problem on your system, and that information may be stored on your system right now.
There are some files you should inspect for error messages. Start with:
Open a terminal and use the command 'ls /var/log/cups' (without quotes). If there is anything in the cups log, you'll see it, especiall if there is a file called error_log. If's there, do 'cat /var/log/cups/error_log' to read the contents.
After that, cd to /var/mail and do ls to see if there's anything there. Should be a file called root, the sysadmin's mail for system errors and such. You may need root privilege to look into that (su root, supply root password, cat /var/mail/root - lot's of info there sometimes).
Finally, cd to /var/log, do ls, and you should see several log and message files you can look through for information from your system to you about it's state of health.
Then come back here with error messages. We might be better able to help.
made some progress: after playing around with the drivers a bit, it now just says 'No pages found.' Still does nothing, no reaction from the printer. PLEASE!! Don't know what more to do???
