Crossover Office 4.2 Help PLease
 

I'm a first time linux user, 4 days ago I download Linspire 5.0 it seems pretty nice OS but its going to take some getting used to and its been quite confusing and frustrating. Anyway to help in the transition period since I do all my work on my computer and I don't have to much time in the short term to learn by trial and error or searching forum after forum. I decided to purchase Crossover 4.2 Standard from what I understand it allows you to run Windows applications in linux. Cool....great.... problem is I cant get the damn program to run. And support from Crossover is just about non existent since I don't have the "pro" version for office networks" the standard which is for single users like me---its support is send an email and wait well it has been 2 days. So If anyone here can help me get this crossover program to run, please I need it I have some assignments due and it doesn't get working soon I'm going to have to reinstall windows and save the linspire for another day (and I really don't want to do that) plus I have a ton of great games that only run in windows :( and I cant play any of them right now. And I want to run itunes.

I downloaded it to "my documents" and when I click the downloaded icon---nothing happens. And in case anyone thinks it might be corrupted I have erased it and re downloaded it 2 more times with no success still nothing happens when I click the icon

I am copying and pasting the text from the Crossover site explaining downloading and running the program::::can anyone please explain to me what a Loki is? What a launch terminal window is? And if I have to open up a window do I type the sh install-crossover.sh?

Because the file you downloaded is just a file and has no executable flag.

Loki ... I don't know, but it sounds like some sort of software business that sells installers, a method to distribute software and to make them installable in an automated way. I don't think you have to care about that.
A launch terminal or just terminal or console is something you should become familiar with when using Linux :) Maybe you know something from your Windows installation like "command line prompt"? I don't know Linspire, but there should be a symbol in your shortcut menus on the desktop or in the textmenus that is labelled "terminal", "console", "konsole", "shell" or something like this. Start it and then type in This will execute the file install-crossover.sh as a shell script. This file contains the needed scripts and files, will extract these, will probably start the "loki" installer ...

OK I GOT IT FIGURED OUT!!!! YAY!!!

Im posting in case anyone else needs to know what to do, especially if your using Linspire. By the way if you just want to see what Linspire is goto linspire..com.

Go to Launch>Programs>Utilities>Konsole

A Konsole window will open

type the installer comand

sh install-crossover-standard-5.2.sh as this is the name of the actual download in the My Documents folder

Then follow instructions on screen

At the end of install, go and right click on Launch button then click Menu Editor and plus out the legacy menu and plus out the run programs menu, now drag the crossover and the windows applications folders down under the run programs menu, save the menu editor and exit.

With this you will have crossover on your Programs menu.

Oh by the way, I dont want anyone to think I figured it out with a snap of the fingers after I read the previous poster's comment, it took me about 20 minutes of dorking around before figuring it out. Fine I now understand what to do in the future, great.....whoopee...(think sarcastic)

But dont you think Linux would be better if the the goddamn program would just automatically install itsself by double clicking the farkin icon! I mean really what a waste of time, 2 days wasted on a problem. Sorry but you got to admit thats one great thing about Windows and unless someone can explain to me the logic behind the shell, konsol, or whatever they call it in your OS and its benefit, then that one has to go to Bill's team.

This might be true for some distros but not for all. Linux and all UNIX-like OSs are designed as multiuser systems and have security considerations solved via various permissions, for example file and folder permissions.
If you decide you don't need that some distros are best for you. For example some people might like it if the computer starts right in the GUI mode and does an autologin for the only user that uses that computer. That comes near Windows and might be handy, but it also is a security problem.

And about the shell: If you just want to start programs by clicking on icons you are probably right. Maybe you will see some examples what you can do with a bash script. That's quite amazing -- Linux has many small command line utilities and every shell has it's own powerful set of commands ... that goes far beyond the classical "dir" "md" and whatever command in MS DOS or Windows.

Dont consider this a bump.

I was checking this thread a day later and rereading what I wote, and I felt I may have come off sounding like I wasnt too happy for the support.

Titopoquito your help was a godsend otherwise I would have never gotten it right, I had no idea I would have to look for a "consol" plus I was getting very frustrated.

Well I have had the OS for a week now, and been tinkering around with, getting more comfortable and liking it more everyday. The best analogy I can think of is the difference between and automatic car and a manual transmission car, takes a little getting used to driving a manual but once you are comfortable you never want to go back to driving the automatic. At least thats my 2 cents.
