Create video file with same parameters from other file?

Is it possible to use an existing video file to create others with the same properties as that file (e.g. Resolution, Video Format, Audio Format)?

My MP3 player only plays .avi videos using a certain resolution of 224 x 176 at 20fps.

The only progam used to create these files is a Windows program and doesn't work well with WINE.

Is there a tool that I can use to inspect the video file and get the resolution and video and audio formats?

Smile Got it to work!

Ok, so after searching I found 3 programs which do what I want they are:

midentify
tcprobe
avidentify

midentify shows:

Code:
ID_DEMUXER=avi
ID_VIDEO_FORMAT=XVID
ID_VIDEO_BITRATE=407488
ID_VIDEO_WIDTH=224
ID_VIDEO_HEIGHT=176
ID_VIDEO_FPS=20.000
ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=1.3295
ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=80
ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=128008
ID_AUDIO_RATE=0
ID_AUDIO_NCH=0
ID_LENGTH=1264.65
ID_VIDEO_CODEC=ffodivx
ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=128000
ID_AUDIO_RATE=44100
ID_AUDIO_NCH=2
ID_AUDIO_CODEC=mp3
From the above I was able to use Mencoder to create a file which is compatible with my MP3 player.

I used the following command line options:

Code:
mencoder -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=4150:me_quality=4:vhq=0 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp2 -vf scale=224:176 -ofps 20 /shared/vids/test.mpg -o /home/gbowden/out.avi
The most troublesome options were the -vf scale=224:176 and -ofps 20 without these options the file wouldn't play on my mp3 player.

Regards,

Greg
