Thanks for all the help fellows. I finally had to re-install. I must have done something right because it seems to run better than before and I am not having the memory problem now. I'm not sure what has changed. As far as new kernels go, I have never compiled a new kernel. I would love to but don't know how yet. Had to learn how to setup and run programs, not fool around with the kernel. Maybe now I can spend the time to learn how to tweak the kernel. I have a dual p3 xeon and I noticed the p3 section is turned off in the kernel. I did view 50 pages of printed kernel configuration and quite a lot of the things in my system is either turned off or no module. I hope to be able to compile a kernel in 6 months or less. "Hope" being the key word. Anyway, thanks again. I am still pretty new at linux but have been learning the networking and database part of linux. That is the part I CAN NOT let go down. The rest I can learn as I go.

One adage you might want to keep in mind. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm not going to compile a 2.6 kernel because, there are subtle difference in default paths during start up that I have to learn first. I think I'll wait until a distro is based on a 2.6 kernel. That way, the library versions will be all compatible.
