"Crash"/logout and sound problem in SuSe 9.1

Hi, I recently installed SuSe 9.1 Linux on my PC. It's working pretty well, except for one thing: when I do certain, seemingly random, things(such as going to wikipedia.org with Opera or opening the google codejam applet in *any* browser) I get logged out of Linux. No error messages, no noises, I just get booted back to the log-in screen. It doesn't just happen with browsers, but those are the two examples that I remember specifically.

Is this a known problem, or is there any way to determine what is causing it? I'm a Linux newbie, so I don't know where error logs might be stored or anything. I've done the YaST online system update already and it didn't fix the problem.

One other thing...something seems to be weird with my sound. After I log in, sound plays extremely quietly until I go to the YaST Hardware control panel and choose sound, at which point it displays my sound card and sound goes back to normal volume. Also, only one program is able to play sound at a time; when I have XMMS playing a song I can't hear sounds from receiving messages. These sound problems aren't as big as the crash problem, but they can be annoying ^^.

Thanks for help in advance.
