courier-imap cannot see mail

I have courier-imap running on a Slackware 10.1 machine.
User authentication is working.
The pop3 and imap clients cannot see mail dropped by procmail

My user directory /home/david/Maildir/ looks like:
drwx------ courierimapkeywords/
-rw-r--r-- courieruiddb
drwx------ new/
drwx------ cur/
drwx------ tmp/
-rw------- Msg.K #email
-rw------- Msg.N #email
all owned by david:david

authtest david gives:
Home Diectory =/home/david
Maildir= (none) # looks wrong
Quota= (none) #no quota set yet

I used maildirmake to create the Maildir

Trying MAILDIRPATH=~/Maildir and $HOME/Maildir both cause the clients to return errors about cannot chdir /root/Maildir

If I manually copy the file into new, then the pop3 client can grab the mail.

It would help to see the user and group of each of the above files and directories. I think it is a permission issue.

As I said everything is user:user

I have courier working now with procmail set to drop mail into $HOME/Maildir/new
Using maildirmake to create sub folders is also working. These are of the form ~/Maildir/.spam/cur,new,tmp as expected.
