Could not start kdeinit - KDE won't run

I am running slackware 10.1 and currently using XFCE for my window manager.

The problem I am having is trying to start KDE up. Choosing KDE from 'xwmconfig', the setup wizard for KDE begins and after I have completed it the splash screen for KDE stops at Initializing system services. Then I am left with a gray screen and my cursor. After I 'Ctrl+Alt+Backspace' my way out of X I see the message "startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation."

I have downloaded the slackware packages again and tried reinstalling slackware and KDE but I get the same problems. I also searched Google but don't see many suggestions on the topic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my initial impression is that some dependncies the kde was compiled against arent being met
but i don't know anything about slackware packages or how they are put together

Thanks for replying.

The versions of the KDE packages are 3.3.2 and the version of the Qt package is 3.3.3.

More messages are the following:

xset: bad font path element (#64), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
startkde: Starting up...
QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

Thanks again.

Sorry, I don't know if this is the information you wanted, but in the file /root/.xsession-errors all I see is "stderr is not a tty - where are you?"

Weird. I installed the KDE packages from a slackware 9.1 archive and those KDE applications work.
