could not start kdeinit (error on startup)

I get the error 'could not start kdeinit. check your installation' when KDE starts up. The only thing i have done recently is a gmake for qt.

Now KDE icons are rough around the edges, and the widgets are very square and dull looking.

A reinstall will kill me after getting dvds and mp3s working
[edit] as well as qt, java, setting paths and installing IDE's from source *sigh*.

[edit2]I have also noticed that my wallpaper is gone. I can go into desktop config and bring it back again, but I thought this might be a useful clue to somebody?[/edit2]

Regards,
unholy

One thing I can suggest is to create another user and start up KDE logged in as that user, that way you can determine if its just affecting your user logged in or a global problem and something that you might have messed up.

If the new user's desktop seems fine, I'd just recommend removing any kde preferences in the user's home directory and then restart KDE, you'll have to customize again but it might save you more trouble that could come in the long run.

I'm not a KDE person though so not totally sure if this will work..

trickykid, that was a great idea *said with hand on heart. The new users desktop was fine. I've found 3 directorys in my home dir.

- .kde
- .kde1
- .kde2

I'm going to zip them all to somewhere safe and see what happens. If I don't reply, you can assume all went ok.

Thanks again,
unholy

Looks like I spoke too soon. I got rid of the dirs, but have the same problem. I'm currently using cmp to comare files in my home dir and the other user. I could take a while though to if anyone knows of another file somewhere that would contain user specific info, I'd love to hear about it.

[edit]
Actually, my taskbar still has all the quirky applets I added, so there must be something somewhere else.[/edit]

I deleted every hidden file and folder in my home directory and that solved the problem. Thanks again for the tip trickykid.
