Is Corel Photo Paint better than gimp?
Either way this is good news. |
It's photopaint in a WINE wrapper. It's not bad although you need a PIII minimum to actually _use_ it.
Oh. and they managed to make it randomly crash just like the W32 version. I had it for about 2 days. I want those 2 days back. |
Better than Gimp ?
You bet !!!!!!!!!!!! (with all the respect I have for Gimp however) Its a 90MB free download & free use ! WOOOOWWW !!!! |
mcleodnine, you must be kidding.
They mention : "Minimum System Requirements To run the applications in Corel PHOTO-PAINT for Linux, you will need to have the following: Pentium® 200 processor or higher 64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM recommended) 170 MB of free hard disk space Linux… Kernel release 2.2 or higher glibc libraries 2.0, 2.1 or compatible X-Windows Package management software for RPM (rpm/kpackage)or Debian Packages (dpkg/apt-get)" No track of Wine or such stuff. On the other side a full Redhat RPM is available ... I'll give it a try and post back what I'll experience. Cheers, |
I think the best way to decribe it would be that it performs on par with Corel's market share and profits. I tried it on lots of different hardware.
Yes. Give it a whirl. I'll be over here using the Gimp. |
membrax, did you happen to notice that that page hasn't even been touched for 18 months? no wonder they say you can manage with a system that shitty.
If Corel's porting / wine skills are anything like their distribution writing skills, i'm with mc9.... wine has come a fair way in that time, but i *still* wouldn't touch it, whatever they've hacked into that must be a scary experience |

OK, thanks for advice, always appreciated.
I'm changing my mind and think i won't risk to try it. Your words give me the creeps. |
I'll have to agree with the tide of opinion here - I just tried installing it, and it don't work on any of my systems.
When I get errors installing which aren't covered in the INSTALL or README file of a program I usually give up, as I'm not looking to debug this program. Corel Graphics does just that I'm afraid. I'm not going to waste 2 days, I'm running the uninstall script now. It is a wine wrapped program too - you can tell just by the Win32 like interface. Eugh. PS. Sorry but gimp is better. Bert |
This script will remove all Corel Graphics 9 packages from this system.
hit <ctrl-c> now to abort. Onward... Beginning System Checks: Checking for a Linux system... OK Found one. Whew!! ;) Checking for WPO2000...not found. Checking for package manager... OK (found rpm at /bin/rpm) Checking for proper C library...***** ERROR Only libc6 versions 2.0 and 2.1 are supported. Neither are installed. Oh dear. This is *terrible*. |
Gasp gasp ...
|
You would think that a company who played at making their own distro would have enough sense and courtesy to wrap their tar files in a directory. Not off to a good start here...
I have glibc 2.3.1-2 so I guess I'm pooched. |
It needs a manual unistall from the rpm directory, satisfying all the removal dependencies.
Membrax, I'm sending you the bill for 20 minutes of my time. Oh, I see you're still paying mcleodine for his 2 days. OK I'll let you off :D Ah well. That'll teach me to be unfaithful to the gimp I s'pose. Bert :) |
I have to say that I really apologize...
Sorry Bert, ... & sorry mcleodnine. I wish I've had some good new for each of us ... For the requested bills, let's see... Who knows, as I'm sometimes travelling for work abroad, I'll buy you more than a drink to be forgiven ! :) |
