copy from Xterm to other app

Hello all,

I'm having quite a nagging problem with Xterm. I've started using Fluxbox some weeks ago, and although I'm very happy about it, there are naturally some details that don't quite match up to my expectations.

So, here's the story:

- I use Xterm as my default X terminal. The main reason are the fonts - Gnome Terminal looks awful and I'm not in the mood of tuning it up right now.

- Xterm cut/copy/paste works fine within a terminal or between terminals, but I can't get anything out of it! Imagine, I just got an error message after using the wrong flags in a program. To look for it in the net I have to copy it by hand..

- Gnome Terminal does work, but it appears to have some kind of connection to the X environment that Xterm doesn't have..

I've looked around Xterm faqs, Xcutsel, Xclipboard, and the like, but didn't find anything to solve this. Now, bearing in mind that copying between apps is an important thing, and that the people developing X are no fools, I must assume I'm screwing up somewhere around here. Is there a way to get copy/paste working through configuration or do we need an application such as Klipper to work it out?

Thanks in advance,

Renato

select what you need in xterm with your mouse and click on your third mouse button to paste.

Hello,

thanks, but that is exactly what I mean when I say it works 'within and between' but not outside.. ex: I copy something, paste it back in the same terminal to check, paste it in a different terminal, try to paste in Firefox (using third button, second button+paste (greyed out), CTRL-V, SH-Ins) and this last one doesn;t work.

EDIT:

Come to think of it, I tried pasting to Xemacs, and it works just fine! On the other hand, Gedit doesn't work; when I click the third button, nothing happens. When I choose paste, something else (nevermind what) comes up. I did read about two different kinds of cut/copy buffers - Xemacs shows this strikingly, with 3rd button pasting from terminal and menu's Paste and SH-Ins pasting from somewhere else (in this case, from the browser where I had copied some stuff)

I guess the problem or misconfiguration is in the communication between 'X' apps and the ones depending on some other widget set.

i don't understand what exactly your problem is:
- middle mouse click works most of the time to paste into other applications and back in
- sometimes you have to use Control-V or to configure the software to allow middle-click paste function.

It's a matter of working with specific applications:

- let's say I copy something from Xterm (simply selecting)
- now I paste it back in the same window, and also in another Xterm. Both were done using middle button, and both worked.
- SH-Ins also worked in both Xterms, pasted exactly what I had selected.

- if I try and paste here, in the exact same window I'm writing in, middle button does nothing, and CTRL-V or SH-Ins give me 'http://www.planetavp.com/al/Aliens/DeletedScenes/'

which is precisely the last URL I copied within Firefox.

- If I bring Xemacs up, and try to paste:
- using the middle button, it pastes what I selected from Xterm
- using SH-Ins, it pastes the URL above

- if I bring Gedit up, and try to paste:
- middle mouse button does nothing
- SH-Ins pastes URL

- if I bring up XMMS, and try to use 'Open Location':
- SH-Ins pastes URL
- middle button does nothing

- if I bring up GV (Ghostview),
- SH-Ins does nothing
- middle button pastes stuff from terminal

Then, I guess some apps understand each other, some only a few. The question is, how do I make >>at least<< Firefox understand Xterm?

copy/paste + xclipboard + firefox/?term functionality

mrcheeks and other nonunderstandables, the problem is this, which is also my question,

why can i not highlight text from a terminal and then paste the text into another program such as firefox without using a tool such as xclipboard?

i.e. i can copy text from firefox and paste that text in another firefox window or to a terminal window. if i then immediately try to copy text from a terminal window into a firefox window, the text that gets pasted is the text i originally copied from firefox, not terminal.

it appears one cannot copy from a terminal window into firefox without using xclipboard. is this something that's inherent to unix and not changeable?

I don't know about you. I can copy and paste using the highlight to copy, middle-button to paste, method to in all my applications. Don't use the copy & paste to clipboard in the menus of applications; that is something completely different.

Also, next time, start a new thread.
