Convert mkv and avi to mov

Hi,

I want to convert .mkv and .avi video to Apple's QuickTime .mov format with h264/avc video and aac mpeg4 audio.

What is best way to do it?

have you tried converting with vlc?

I would use ffmpeg or mencoder.

I want to use my Kodak Zi8 camcorder as a portable media player, so I can watch my edited videos on tv over HDMI.

I was able to convert avi and mkv to h264+aac quicktime mov with VLC and Transmaggedon, but these files didn't play on my camcorder.
Videos witch is converted with the ArcSoft Kodak Impression video editing software that came with my camera, play well.

I did a little research and find out that the Kodak Zi8 records and plays Ambarella's h264/AVC and Ambarella's MPEG4 AAC quicktime mov files.

Is it possible to convert files on Ubuntu using Ambarella's codecs?

I used to use a little piece of software called Faasoft Video Converter to convert AVI files to mov, happy with it.
