Convert DVD to AVI software?

Hi all,

I'm trying to convert my homemade video from DVD format to AVI, so I could store it safely on my HD without wasting much space.

So far I have found DVDRip that does it. BUT my CPU (AMD 64bit; it's a laptop by the way) overheats, the software must be run as root  , and it takes 8 HOURS to complete!

Does anyone know of a better+faster way?

Thank you in advance.

Eugene

Acidrip - http://untrepid.com/acidrip/

Absolutly brilliant, just playing around with it now, seems pretty decent.

It's a GUI front end for the memcoder/mplayer combo Slackie was suggesting.

if you want a backup why not use another dvd?

That way it will have the same quality. Or save it as .iso in the hd.
