Question console split in half on Kubuntu 6.10

I've had this problem for a very long time, and i can't figure out how to fix it. When i load the console using F1-F6, the console isn't showing the full screen, instead its cut in half so it prints the information on the left side, down half the page and prints the rest right next to it on the right. The only real information came accidentally when i was checking to see who was logged in using "w", it told me "40 column window to narrow.

any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

.e

One place to try is /etc/termcap. Look for something like this:
Quote:
dumb|80-column dumb tty:\
:am:\
:co#80:\
:bl=^G:cr=^M:do=^J:sf=^J:
unknown|switch|patch|unknown terminal type:\
:am:gn:\
:co#80:\
:bl=^G:cr=^M:do=^J:sf=^J:
net|network|arpanet|dialup|unknown network terminal type:\
:am:gn:\
:co#80:\
:bl=^G:cr=^M:do=^J:sf=^J:
lpr|printer|line printer:\
:bs:hcs:\
:co#132:li#66:\
:bl=^G:cr=^M:do=^J:ff=^L:le=^H:sf=^J:
glasstty|classic glass tty interpreting ASCII control characters:\
:am:bs:\
:co#80:\
:bl=^G:cl=^L:cr=^M:do=^J:kd=^J:kl=^H:le=^H:nw=^M^J:ta=^I:
Notice the :co#80:\ line in four of the listings. Check your /etc/termcap for a line that reads :co#40:\, and change it to :co#80:\.

Note: termcap may be a symlinked file. Do 'ls -l /etc/termcap', and edit the file to which it points, if any.

i don't have a /etc/termcap file.

there is a /usr/share/perl/5.8.8/termcap.pl file but theres nothing in it to fix anything.
