He meant that you don't configure a video card for a specific media player (such as VLC but not, say, mplayer). Typically, you install the correct driver for you card. As Eddy1 asked above, what steps have you taken and what problems have you encountered? The more information you give, the easier it is to help you find a solution.

I would honestly like to help you but your post lacks any relevant info. Others would have alrrady chimed in if you had've done that. In general graphics problems can be solved here or by googling. Althogh the i845 has problems it can be made functional. I can say that, if you look at my signature, that i845 is not going to work any better than the i915 that is presently in my acer aspire. When playing netflix there is always a buffer maybe every 2 minutes & thay was after cleaning the cpu fan.
Please excuse me for having asking the wrong question. I had incorrectly thought that I needed to configure the video card for a particular DVD player if I wanted to use it. I've tried almost all the available DVD players provided by Ubuntu 12.04 without success.
1)smplayer: Good sound but video not good. Error: Too many packets in the buffer. Trying recommended -ni option didn't help.
2)vlc: No video. Error:ES_OUT_RESET_PCR alled, no available XVdideo adapter. Trying any of all listed video output formats didn't help.
3)mplayer2: Speech good but sound and video mixed up and muffled.
By the way, I've had no trouble at all in installing and running VLC in Windows XP or Ubuntu 12.04 on my MacBook Pro laptop. I guess the explanation may lie in the more robust hardware, especially
an Nvidia graphics card.
I have seen libdvdcss2 and libdvdnav4 in the /usr/share/doc/ directory not too long ago.
At the moment I cannot answer your questions or try out your suggestions because my machine's Ubuntu 12.04 fails to boot. Repair-boot does not help. I'll get back to you when the problem is resolved. Thanks.
