Configuring GRUB

Hi,
I installed Linux (FC3) over win xp..Now Grub, while booting,asks if booting is to be done from another os.
I have removed win..So how do i configure grub not to ask this redundant option and boots linux automatically (without a prompt)

I understand the above mentioned prompt lasts onle 3 sec...but if one doesnt wish even that to happen!!...

Any ideas?

post your /boot/grub/menu.lst

i believe there is an option to boot straight into a particular partition. however, i can't remember what this is. I'm afraid you might have to read the man page :-) in fact on my old ubuntu install it used to auto select one partition after 10 secs. no reason why you can't reduce this to 0 seconds. however, like i say, i can't recall how to do this...

Does it say WHAT OS--other than FC3?

In /boot/grub/menu.lst, you can specify all the boot options, and you can specify things like the delay time before it defaults.

Many sources of docs on grub, including the grub website.

post your /boot/grub/menu.lst

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,4)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda7
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora Core (2.6.9-1.667)
root (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-1.667.img
title Other
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

i found no man pages for menu.lst

Default 0 means 'boot the first OS in the list'. Timeout 5 means 'wait 5 seconds before continuing the boot process'. If you change the timeout to 0, grub will wait indefinitely until you press enter. Change the timeout to 1, and it will boot almost immediately.

You have two OSs listed in menu.lst. The second is:
title Other
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Delete or comment out those lines.
