Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I'm trying to configure CUPS to print with my Lexmark Z42 printer, but I don't think that it is supported, considering there are no lexmark drivers on their site, nor in the CUPS configuration. Is there anything I can do to get this to print using CUPS, or is there an alternative to CUPS that would work?
Distribution: Mandrake 9.0 1st/9.1 2nd/Gentoo 1.4 now
I have a lexmark x73 that uses the same driver as yours. First install cups and get the daemon to work, after that install the printing package named gimp-print. If you don't want to compile it from source search for an RPM. then go to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/localhost:631/admin as user name enter "root" and as password your root password. form there click add printer and fill all the blanks with whatever you like except for the one that says location, in that blank put the printer device mine is "/dev/usb/lp0" for an USB printer. After that there is a list of the possible locations of your printer if yours is a USB like mine choose USB printer #1 (it may say the name of your printer in parenthesis). when it ask you for the driver to use from the list choose LEXMARK. After that choose the LEXMARK Z42 CUPS+GIMP-PRINT. Your done, now print a test page to make sure its working.
Since your using Mandrake (I think), go into rpmdrake and download the "printer drivers" (I think that is what it is called) package and maybe that'll do the trick. That'll install the gimp print without the hastle of compiling it.
I already have the printer drivers, and I am using a Lexmark X85 printer. I use GNOME and it already has a bunch of Lexmark utilities in the printer folder. But I just can't configure the printer right in cups. I'll get back to you with my settings because I am busy at the moment, but I have it plugged into my Dell 4550 in the second USB port, first position, on the back of my com. BTW I have three USB hubs on my com (1 in front and two in back). sears.
What's happening when you try to configure the printer? Is it not responding? How far are you getting in the configuration? Maybe it's possible that you are not selecting the correct drivers when you are going through the configuration.
Are you sure the device is plugged into lp1? Also, it may be possible that the x85 isn't supported by these specific drivers. Maybe you can give some of the other ones in the list a shot, and see what you get.

To tell you the truth I don't know if that is the right location or not...I have tried many combonations of both sets. How would I find out the right set? I have gone through dev/usb but it is empty and the hardware config tool in MCC doesn't give me any locations either.
