./configure problem

I am not sure if there is a problem with my automake or the script?

I do ./configure (says to do in the script) does not work.
So i just made the configure.in executeable and ran that. I got these erros
<command> ./configure.in
./configure.in: line 4: syntax error near unexpected token `2.57'
./configure.in: line 4: `AC_PREREQ(2.57)'

I dont know if this can tell you anything. I am very new to being back on linux. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What program are you trying to build? Post a link to the downloaded file you are trying to build.

Builds fine on my end here.

Just to make sure about a few items. You have extracted it to a temporary location say your home directory.
So it is in /home/<username>/footools.
Then you went into the src directory /home/<username>/footools/src and run the ./configure command there?

Just want to make sure you are in the right area. If you are then what error you get when running ./configure?

The configure file is missing from the output of the ls command. Should be one that is a script called configure.

How about redownloading the tarball and extract to a clean location and try again.
