Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

ok, simple question - what is this ./configure make makeinstall stuff
ive been using slack for all of about a week, and slagged through the troubles with my install, network, and the grand finale of THE RADEON 9600 OF DOOM! heh, but now i want to install things, and not knowing a think about linux (beside the obvious feeling that once i figure it out ill never use windows again) i dont know what to do
for instance, gaim, id like to install it to use msn, but anything i read skims over the simple stuff under the assumption i know how to do it.
another problem, my keyboard is wacky, questions mark - É
backslash - é
alot of my punctuation is messed, not sure how to fix this
and a final note, i tried to install a package - nss-3.8-noarch-1.tgz
and it gave me this:
bash-2.05b# installpkg nss-3.8-noarch-1.tgz
Cannot install nss-3.8-noarch-1.tgz: package does not end in .tgz
Thanks for reading! hopefully somebody can help
(watch out, or ill pull the dreaded "ive had enough of this! im going back to windows where bill gates will hold my hand!")
Configure checks and makes sure you have all the programs the current one depends on
make compiles the package (turns it from C/other language code to machine code)
make install, uses the make program in a way that it moves the program files to their proper places so that they work nicely.
All this is defined in a file called Makefile type:
In the folder you usually run make in
