configure error - C compiler cannot create executables
 

I'm trying to install a program and am new at this. Can anyone help?
This is what I'm getting when typing ./configure:

root@ubuntu:/home/lobster/Desktop/xvidcap-1.1.3# ./configure

checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

What does config.log say? Do you have the packages to compile software installed? What Distro?
