I just installed openSuSE 10.2 on my new laptop (compaq v6000), and while everything works, the system bell is driving me crazy!! I followed the instructions of http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_NoBeep which said to add "set bell-style none" to /etc/inputrc. I did that, but then it beeped at me again. I had the volume fully muted. I literally jump every time I hear it, because it's not only the normal annoying system bell, but it's really loud too. Does anyone know how to disable it without opening up the box and ripping the bell out? I'm fine with reconfiguring the speaker as a module but I'd like to know what my options are before I dive into my working system's kernel.
It happens when I run bluej (educational java compiler) from command line. I tried the link, but to no avail. When I get a compile-time error, it beeps. I do use Konsole and in Konsole system bell style is set to none. It also happens when I reboot. I haven't rebooted since I tried setterm, but I'll reboot and let you know.
Well it doesn't beep on restart, but the nagging java problem is still there. I guess maybe it has some thing to do with the fact that Bluej uses java, but I don't know.
Well, that's not the only problem, it turns out. When I mute my computer, suspend, and resume, although it thinks it's muted, it's not. I just found that. If I unmute and mute again, then it works. The other problem seems to only be with bluej. If I run it "not from the terminal" it still beeps. I'll check out the website when I get a chance.
Edit: It appears to also happen with Firefox, when I type / and search for characters. If it doesn't find what I'm typing I get a pcspeaker beep.
