compiz issues

So let me explain what I have. I'm running debian 6 with gnome 2. I've downloaded compiz 0.9.7.6 from linux.softpedia website to my usb card. From there I put the file on my desktop, extracted it. When I do "apt-get install compiz" it says unable to locate file. And when I do the "mkdir build cd build cmake .." it says command not found. I've searched everywhere and nothing seems to work. I don't have internet, accept my android which explains downloading to usb. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try firing up the Synaptic Package Manager and installing compiz from there? You shouldn't need to download this from softpedia.

I did try that but I only have the first 4 cd downloads from debian.org and compiz is not on any of those, think I should download cd5.iso?

There is a procedure for downloading packages onto a computer with a connection (and Debian), copying files to a USB stick and installing on the machine without a connection. I do not remember the details, but it has been discussed on the Debianforum.

If that is not an option, the package you have could probably be compiled from source. Personally, I think this thread should be moved to the Debian section, where it would be more likely to be seen by people who can give the answers you need.

Edit
You can view the contents of the discs at http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/current/

Ah, gotcha. I always use the "netinstall" disk, so I don't know. But your source should be the Debian Squeeze repositories, rather than pointing to the installation disks. So that's weird.

It is not weird, because the OP does not have an internet connection.

Yeah, just read the OP again, and saw that, missed it the first time. That would do it, alright!

Update: okay I found compiz to be on cd-8.iso on debian.org. thanks for the replies.

Since you need packages on disc because of the lack of internet, I suggest using DVDs in the future. You would probably only need DVD1. Even if you needed the first two DVDs, it would be more convenient than downloading and storing several CDs. Provided the connection on the computer you use for downloading is not too slow of course.

I did try the dvd but for whatever reason my android would not download it.
