Unhappy Compiling 2.6.2

Hi.... i just installed redhat 9.0 for the first time (yes i know... complete noob).... and i dont have sound or radeon support... anyway i am trying to recompile my kernel to 2.6.2 I have tried for days with no luck... i compile and sometimes i get kernel panic... sometimes it boots up but tons of failiures... and so on... Now my question is when i compile it and do xconfig... i can load up my previous config and work from there correct? That way i have everything selected... Now... do i even need the initrd image file at all? i made that image file for the 2.6.2 but whenver i try to boot it says kernel panics... what can i put on my grub config file that will let me boot w/o the initrd file if i built in most of the modules i need inside the kernel.... my linux partion is on my second hardrive first partition if that helps any... Thanks!

Also... just to make my life easier... is there a rpm version of the 2.6.2 kernel? If so.. .can someone link it for me. Thanks again!

I have not used rehat in a while so this may be a bit off but here we go.
Installing kernel source rpm on the CD should give you /usr/src/linux-VERSION/.config which will be the config they used. Copy that to your kernel directory. Do "make oldconfig" answer the questions it asks and then do "make xconfig" and go through and make changes.

I'm not shore about the rpm. I just looked on rpmfind and dont see one for redhat just mandrake.
