Angry Compile problem with souce code

Hi - im trying to installed a program when I type ./configure I get the following message:

checking for gcc.....gcc
checking for C compiler default output....configuire: error: C compiler cannot create executables
see 'config.log' for more details.

Does anyone know what this error is and how to fix it?

that's not a package, that's a bunch of packages.
and it's just the most likely thing, i think. header files missing.
