Compile PHP as commandline app?

After getting no help on the php forums, and finding pathetic documentation on the subject on the actual php.net website for installing... I figure, WHAT the HEY?! Might as well ask here...

So, I'm trying to find docs/howto/installation instructions to make php (4.1.2) into a commandline app.

Apparently it gets made into this when you build as CGI, however the pathetic INSTALL docs only talk about making it a dso for apache, or built into apache, or static with apache. What a load of help...

I've been installing PHP for apache for the past two years without any problems... however I never actually needed the commandline version until now, so thus why I am stumped!

Any pointers to useful docs that don't just say "you compile it as a cgi" and not give how you ACTUALLY GO ABOUT DOING THAT?! I'm getting quite sharged up with the bad documentation out there for what is actually simple. Just can't assume anything in the linux world, as assumptions for installation lead to serious issues and broken problems.

Did your "search" of the php.net site take you to this page?

http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.commandline.php

BYA, cli = commond line interface

The configure instructions seem pretty straight for to me.
But don't expect to find it as part of you standard build.

Heh right... I got to that page from the page that talked about compiling for cgi/commandline (which btw, that page as well didnt say HOW... lol!).

The configure commands on the link you gave were for only 4.3 (didnt work in the last stable of 4.1.2).

I know the command line works in 4.1.2 cause RH7.3 automatically installs the commandline app during the OS install (couldnt figure out HOW it did it, as it doesnt say waaah). The php app I have on the other machine (YDL2.1) is of version 4.0.4pl1... and its really really broken for mysql... thus why I am trying to install the 4.1.2 version of the php commandline executable.

Gah. Ive been scowering the net, googling, and php.net and other php forums... crazy! I have GOT to just be overlooking something. I recompiled the PHP on the machine like 20 times now, all with different configure commands to see if it will do it... grr, no.

I've managed to get it to install "/usr/bin/phpextdist" "/usr/bin/phpize" "/usr/bin/phptar" and "/usr/bin/php-config". None of which are the right thing

Thanks for the pointer though! Heh =)

Big guy ---

1. It's listed as EXPERMENTIAL, so it won't install bins for cli by default. i.e it's pre-aplha

2. You should be using php-4.2.1.

3. Compile with correct flag for cli, then dig around in the src dir you'll find it.

4. As far as MySQL? PHP has changed alot between 4.0.x
and 4.1.x and now 4.2.x?

5. The that page tells you exactly how to make it work, didn't yuu see the command : "php -f" statements?
