Question Compile help

I've always had trouble on every distro I've used (Redhat, Suse, Mandrake, and Gentoo) with programs randomly getting an anonymous error when I try to compile a program, and thus I've always had to resort to RPMs. What are the possible things that could cause these errors? Straight out of the box Mandrake and Redhat have these errors popping up, Gentoo was just plain bad, but Suse seems to hold it's ground under alot of circumstances, but still does it.

Any compile freaks out there who can answer this for me? Thanks
