Commpressed .wav files

Could someone tell me what form off commpresion you could use on audio CD's and still have them work in cd players, would MP3 work if the player played both CD's and MP3's?
And also if you know of good programs that would convert the files.
Thanx

I doubt that any kind of compressed format would work in standard CD players, or else we'd have seen them on the market by now :) Mp3 works well though; there are tons of mp3/CD players out there. You can get 'em for around $30.00 nowadays.

As for an mp3 conversion program, the only one worth talking about is LAME.
