Command to display version

I have searched around (even used the "Has this been asked" button) but I can't seem to find if there is a command which tells you which version of Linux you are using. If anyone knows such a command could you let me know. Thanks.

uname -a
may (or may not) give you the information.

Many distros will have a file in /etc that
states the name and version, try a
find /etc -iname "*version*"

There certainly is no "global", unified
way of doing that.

Cheers,
Tink
