Comandline program for making up backup-versions? (like gui-less filehamster?)

Hi, i am trying to find some software for linux (especially for minimal systems that i could run on my DNS323) that is say something like "Filehamster" w/o the GUI. That is, i want something that i can install on my DNS323 that will make backups of versions of files so like if a file changes it will save a copy of that file (b/gziped hopefully) with appropriate info appended. I have had a hard enough time finding something like this for windows (mainly Docshield and filehamster. Any thoughts or ideas would really be appreciated!

Cheers

You may want to take a look at rdiff-backup:

http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/

or the traditional tool, rsync:

http://www.samba.org/rsync/

They're both command line utilities that would normally be used in a prepared backup bash script that is set to run at specified intervals using the cron utility.

Rdiff a windows machine from a linux machine?

Hi, please forgive my noobness but i took a look over rsync and rdiff and rdiff is *Exactly* what i need (thanks Kilgoretrout!) but now i am trying to figure out how i can backup documents on my other boxes. I have a DNS323 which has Linux on it (which i have bolstered a bit with FFP) and i would like to setup rdiff to either watch or run scheduled backups of various folders (on my Linux and windows desktop boxes)... problem is I am not quite sure where to start. I am thinking maybe setup my winbox folder as shared then mount it in my DNS323 but would i have to logon to my DNS323 to unmount every time i want to turn my winbox off? sorry, this is ever so slowly congealing in my head (ie having a hard time imagining how to go about this).

Any ideas would of course be appreciated!

Cheers
