Question

It appears that Linux only goes up to com port 4, only my modem is set to com port 5. Is there anyway to get Linux to see com port 5? I really don't want to take it off 5 and put it somewhere else so Linux will see it. I can only handle trying to figure out one OS at a time. I got my Windows 98 running just fine now and don't want to tamper with anything in it. When I first loaded Linux I clicked the wrong button and it wiped my whole drive, so I got another hard drive to put windows on one and Linux on part of the other and don't want to have to reload windows again that is not fun.

Thanks for any work arounds you may have.

Is your modem a PCI one (i.e. softmodem or winmodem)? You may need drivers to allow Linux to recognise it. Linux can see all ports (mine modem is on com16, or /dev/ttyS15), using the command 'setserial' in a terminal will allow to see what is going on (use 'man seterial' to find out how to use it.

Thank you very much for the information. It will take me some time to figure that out, maybe I need a class in greek first (smile). I am hopeful though, it will be nice to get something working for a change. Is there not a program (rpm)or something like that that can do it for me? I am so new to this program, and I don't want to mess it up.

Thank you for your help.
