Colorizing rows/columns in Open Office Calc

I highlight a column by selecting "D" > format cells > background > I select a color and press OK. But the color on the document remains the same. What am I doing wrong?

These are its permissions:

-rw-r--r--

I changed to:

-rw-rw-r--

Still the same problem.

It has something to do with the fact the KDE color theme overrides the formatting in open office. I don't know why anyone would want this behaviour. I don't understand why the KDE theme colors the document itself? Sure, color the menus and whatever, but the document?

If I change the KDE color theme to the default I can change the color of the columns/rows.
